This Report deals with the result, of test conducted in the Diesel Engine Testing laboratory of the Prototype Development and Training Central The National Small Industries Corporation Ltd., (A Government of India Undertaking) Bhavnagar Road, RAJKOT – 360 003 on a Single Cylinder, Vertical Diesel Oil Engine, Manufactured by M/S. POWER ENGINEERING CORPORATION, 11-E, Bhaktinagar Industrial Estate, RAJKOT and rated by them at 8 BHP 850 RPM. (As per Indian Standards Condition)

Introduction :

At the instance of the Assistant Director (Marks), Indian Standards Institution, Ahmedabad Branch office Ahmedabad, vide his letter No. MDA/2:613(78) dated 30-4-79 the Diesel Engine Testing Laboratory, Prototype Development and Training Center, Rajkot under took the testing of the Engine No. 479/525 code No. A/DLG/PEC/790416/A-1 The test was started on 7-5-79 and concluded on 28-7-79.

Brief Description of the Engine :

Type “POWERIN”, Vertical 8.0 BHP 850 RPM Single cylinder, Water Coolant, Four Stroke, totally enclosed with C. I. Piston and Taper ball Bearing, Diesel Oil Engine.

Detailed specifications are given in the Appendix-I.

Object of the test :

The Tests are carried out with a view to verify the response of the engine to the specifications laid down by T. S. 1600 and 1601 of 1960 which comprise the following

  • Dimensional Verification.
  • Preliminary running of the Engine for 49 Hr for 7 hours cycles each of which is run a follows
    • 11/2 hour 25%, Full Load.
    • 2 hour 50% Full load.
    • 11/2 hour 75% Full Load.
    • 2 hour 100% Full load.

    During this period, the general behavior of the engine was observed.

  • Fuel Consumption test, during which the consumption of fuel over its entire range of loads is recorded.
  • 12 hours ratings test, as Per IIS:1601-of 1960.
  • Governing test as per 159:1601 of 1960.
  • 500 hour endurance test at rated speed, in cycles of 16 hours nonstop running each of which is made up of
    • 100% rated load 4 hour.
    • 50 % rated load 4 hour.
    • 110% rated load 1 hour.
    • 100 rated load 31/2 hour.
    • 50% rated load 31 hour.
  • Fuel consumption test As In (c)
  • 12 hours rated test as in (d).
  • Governing test as in (e).
  • Dimensional Verification as in (a)

Test Setup and Measurement :
The engine was mounted On a test bed directly coupled to a water bra]* of the type IIVM Mark 2 having a constant BHP = W X N/1000, manufactured by M/s. Hari & Co., Banglore and certified by Indian Institute of Science, Banglore. The dynamometer has its water supply from a gravity tank of constant head.

The fuel to the engine is supplied by an over head tank through a flow burette having a capacity of 50 cc by means of which the fuel consumption could be determined with A stop watch 1/10 ROCAR.

Dial type 20-600 deg. C thermometer is fitted at very close point to the engine exhaust for measurement of exhaust pas temperature.

A sampling outlet to the exhaust in provided. This to also used to measure the exhaust book pressure with the help Of a ‘U’ tube water manometer.

The cooling water outlet temperature is measured by mercury thermometer 0-110 deg. C.

The atmospheric conditions are observed by means of’ the followings :

  • Temperature : Mercury in glass thermometer of the range 0-110 deg. C. graduation upto 1.0, deg. C.
  • Pressure : Aneroid Barometer.
  • Humidity : This was calculated from the observations of dry bulb and wet, bulb thermometer readings.
  • Engine Speed This was measured in RPM by means of a hand tachometer “Smith” during the entire test.

During the entire test, the following fuel oil end lubricating oil were used :

Fuel Oil : High Speed Diesel Oil (Sp. Cr. : 0.82)

Lubricating Oil : SAE-30

Test Procedure :

  • Measurement : On receipt of the said engine in the Laboratory is was examined and found that the ISI seal was tntect.
  • Preliminary Run : After the dimensional verification the engine was mounted on the test bed with all its instruments necessary for measuring BHP, fuel consumption, exhaust temperature and cooling water outlet temperature. It was subjected to a run of 49 hours at the rated speed as indicated in 3 (b) under nominal operating temperature. During this run special attention was paid to the engine vibration and quietness. Check ups were made for tightness of components.
  • Performance Test : This test consists of three parts :

    1. Fuel Consumption Test : The Engine was run for sometime to attain a Steady working temperature of cooling water outlet and lubricating oil. The engine was run at no load and in step of 20% load up to full load and at 10% overload.
    2. Rating Test : 12 hour rating test consists of 11 hour full load at the rated speed followed by one hour run at 10% overload.
    3. Governing Test : For Governing Test, the hydraulic dynamometer was disconnected from the engine and was loaded by a brake drum of diameter 323 mm and temp. rope of dia. 25 mm and spring balance and weights were used. The engine was loaded for full load and speed was adjusted to its rated speed and then the load was suddenly taken off by loosening the rope wrapped around the brake drum. The instantaneous and steady speeds were measured by tachometer. Similarly the tests were repeated for change of each step of 20%.
  • Endurance Test : The Engine was run for 500 hour in accordance with the specified rated of loading during the 16 hour cycle as per IIS:1600-1960.
  • The correction factor for power output and specific fuel consumption were arrived at as per clause 4.2, 4.3 and 7.2 of IIS:1601-1960

Test Results :

The results thus obtained from measurement test observations have been presented in Appendices. Some of them have been summarized here for convenience.

  • During the preliminary run there was no vibration or leakage. No components was replaced.
  • The Engine developed full rated rower and the average specific fuel consumption values obtained during ratings tests were 253.5 gms/kw/hr and 256.2 gms/kw/hr before And after 500 hrs. endurance test respectively.
  • The Engine developed full power for 11 hour during the rating tests and could withstand 10% overload during 12th hour satisfactorily.
  • The specific fuel consumption and the exhaust temperature during the rating tests were reasonably constant.
  • The steady speed bond was well within 1% as required by the standard.
  • The behavior of the governor from full load to no load And vice versa was within the limit required for class B. Also for various steps of 20% load change the change of speed was within permissible limits.
  • The wear of the parts listed in clause 3.1 Of IIS:1600-1960 was recorded In appendix-III.
  • As per maintenance schedule Of the manufacturer the lubricating oil was renewed after every 250 Hrs. of run. The makeup of lubricating oil added to the sump during the period of 500 hrs. to top up the level in the sump was 3.0 liters. Lubricating oil was changed at the end of rating test before endurance and l6th 16 hrs. cycle.

Conclusion :

  • The running of the engine during preliminary run was quite satisfactory without vibration or undue heating of lubricating oil or Crank case.
  • The specific fuel consumption and the exhaust gas temperature were reasonably constant during the rating test.
  • The average lubricating oil consumption ion during the entire test was 7.7 ml/hr. This is about 0.67% of the total fuel used.
  • The steady speed band was always within limits.
  • The wear of components are tabulated In appendix-III but no replacement or reconditioning of the components were required before and after endurance run.
  • The engine controls are simple and effective.
